The Great Catsby (Part 4): The Showdown on the Fridge π§πΎπΆοΈπ―οΈβοΈ
It was the hottest day of the summer. The air was heavy, like a wet wool blanket. We decided to go to townβwhich meant, in feline terms, migrating to the Kitchen, where the floor was cool tile. ποΈβοΈπ‘οΈ
But the real action was happening higher up. We climbed the **Ladder-Style Window Tree** to reach the summit of the Refrigeratorβthe Plaza Hotel of the house. It was a place of high stakes and cold cuts. π§ββοΈπ§π¨
Tom Purr-chanan was already there, looking hulking and aggressive in his thick fur. He glared at Catsby. "I suppose you're going to tell me that you invented the sunbeam next," he sneered. πΎβοΈ
"I didn't invent it," Catsby said calmly, though his tail was twitching. "But I appreciate it. Daisy appreciates it. She never loved you, Tom. She only married you because you controlled the best window-sill." ππ
"She does love me!" Tom roared. "She loves me and my ability to open the pantry door! And what's more, I love Daisy too. Once in a while I go off on a spree and sniff other cats' catnip, but I always come back, and in my heart I love her all the time." πͺπΏπΏ
Daisy looked from one to the other. She looked terrified. "I... I did love him onceβbut I loved you too, Jay," she whispered. π
Catsby looked as if he had been hit by a spray bottle. "You loved me *too*?" he repeated. "You loved me *too*?" π¦π
The dream was dead. The Green Light flickered and went out. Catsby realized that you can't repeat the past, especially not when the past involves a cat who changes her mind every time a new can is opened. π’βπ°οΈ
"I'm going home," Catsby said quietly. "Daisy, are you coming?"
Daisy looked at Tom, then at Catsby. She looked at the cool, hard surface of the fridge. "I think," she said, "I think I'll stay here. It's closer to the milk." π₯π§
Catsby turned and descended the ladder alone. It was a long way down. ππ¦
