The Tale of Peter-Pounce (Part 2)
Peter-Pounce jumped out of the laundry basket and rushed toward the back of the "Great-White-Boxes"βthe washing machine and the dryer. π§Ίβ‘οΈ It was a very narrow space, filled with the hum of machinery and the scent of lemon-detergent. ππ
The Resident Staff was close behind, their footsteps echoing on the tile. "Peter! Come out this instant! Youβre getting your whiskers all dusty!" π’π΅οΈββοΈ
But Peter-Pounce did not want to come out. He wanted to find a way back to the Library, or at least to a place where there weren't any spray-bottles. π π‘οΈ He squeezed further into the shadows, his heart going *thump-thump-thump* against his ribs. πππ
Suddenly, he saw a glimmer of light. It was a small, round opening in the wallβthe vent for the dryer! πβ¨ It was covered with a mesh screen, but the screen was slightly loose at one corner. Peter-Pounce, being a kitten of great determination (and very soft fur), managed to wiggle his nose into the gap. ππΈοΈβ¨
With a final, desperate *sqquueeeeze*, he popped through! π₯β¨
He found himself on a narrow wooden ledge behind the machines. Above him was a high window, and attached to it was a **Spring-Action Sill Mount**. π°ποΈ This was a clever device that used tension to stay secure without any screws, and it had a very soft, swappable cover that smelled of the outdoors. πΏπβ¨
"Aha!" Peter-Pounce whispered. "A High-Place! The Staff cannot reach me here!" ππ
He leaped onto the sill mount. It was incredibly stable, not even wobbling as his weight hit it. From this vantage point, he could see the whole of the laundry room. ποΈπ He saw the Resident Staff looking under the ironing board, their face full of confusion. π΅οΈββοΈπ
"Where could that kitten have gone?" the Staff muttered, scratching their head. πΆπ«οΈ
Peter-Pounce sat very still, his tail tucked neatly around his paws. He felt very clever indeed. He watched as the Staff finally gave up the search and went back to the Sun-Room Garden to tend to the succulents. π¦π β¨
Once the coast was clear, Peter-Pounce began to explore his new territory. The sill mount offered a magnificent view of the Backyard-Beyond. ππ He saw a fat robin hopping on the lawn and a black-and-white cat (who looked suspiciously like his cousin, Benjamin-Bouncer) sitting on the fence. π¦π€΅ββοΈπββ¬β¨
"I am a King!" Peter-Pounce declared to the robin. "I am the King of the White-Box-Tunnels!" πποΈ
But as the afternoon wore on, the laundry room became very quiet and a little bit chilly. βοΈ The sun began to move away from the window, and the soft cover of the sill mount didn't feel quite so warm anymore. Peter-Pounce began to think of his mother and the comfortable hollow under the armchair. ππ πΏ
"I think," he sighed, "that being a King is a very lonely business. And I am starting to feel a bit rumbley in my tummy." π¦π₯π¦
He looked down at the floor. It was a long way down, and the spray-bottle might still be waiting. But then he remembered the Spring-Action Sill Mount had a second levelβa series of small, carpeted steps that led back to the floor. π§ββοΈπΎβ¨
"Logic!" Peter-Pounce purred. "I shall use the steps!" π§ β¨
He descended gracefully, his paws making no sound on the carpet. He reached the floor and slipped back through the dryer vent, through the laundry room, and into the hallway. πΎπ¨ He was almost home!
But just as he reached the Library door, he heard a sound that made his fur stand on end. ππ
*VROOOOOM!* πͺοΈπ¨π¨
The Great Mechanical Monsterβthe Vacuumβhad been awakened! π±πͺοΈ
