The Tale of Peter-Pounce (Part 3)
The Library was no longer a place of peace and aesthetic lint-hunting. ππ It was a place of roaring, whirling chaos! The Great Mechanical Monsterβthe Vacuumβwas prowling across the rug, its long, hungry neck devouring everything in its path. πͺοΈπ¨π¨
Old Mrs. Tabby-Cat had already ushered Flopsy-Fur, Mopsy-Mew, and Cotton-Tail-Kit into the deepest, darkest corner of the armchair. ποΈπ‘οΈ But Peter-Pounce was stuck in the middle of the room, far from the safety of the upholstery. πππ
"Run, Peter!" his mother meowed over the roar. "Find the High-Ground!" ποΈπ’
Peter-Pounce didn't need to be told twice. He scrambled toward the bookshelves, but the Monster was heading that way too. πͺοΈπ¨ He pivoted and ran toward the large bay window. There, leaning against the wall, was the **Ladder-Style Window Tree**. π°ποΈπ§ββοΈ
This was a magnificent structure, a lean-to style tree that provided vertical climbing access to the very top of the window frame. It had multiple steps, all wrapped in sturdy sisal, and it looked like the safest place in the world. π‘οΈβ¨π§ββοΈ
Peter-Pounce leaped onto the first step. *Thump!* He scrambled to the second. *Scritch!* He didn't stop until he reached the very highest observation deck, nearly seven feet above the floor. ποΈπβ¨
He looked down. From up here, the Mechanical Monster looked much smaller and much less threatening. It couldn't climb! It could only prowl the "Dog-Zone" of the carpet. Peter-Pounce felt a wave of relief wash over him. π¦π‘οΈπͺοΈ
"You can't catch me, you loud, clumsy beast!" Peter-Pounce hissed, though his tail was still a bit puffy. πΎπͺοΈ
As he sat there, catching his breath, he noticed that he wasn't alone. On the step below him sat his cousin, Benjamin-Bouncer. π€΅ββοΈπββ¬ Benjamin was a slightly older, slightly more sensible cat, but even he looked a bit rattled by the vacuum. ππ
"Hullo, Peter," Benjamin said, grooming a ruffled patch on his shoulder. "I see youβve discovered the Ladder-Tree. Itβs the only way to travel when the Staff starts the 'Great-Cleaning.'" π§ββοΈποΈβ¨
"Itβs wonderful," Peter-Pounce agreed, his eyes widening as he looked out the window. From this height, he could see over the fence and into the neighbor's garden. ππ He could see the tops of the trees and the distant, shimmering roof of the "Glass-House" (the greenhouse). π²π°β¨
"It gives you a very grand perspective, doesn't it?" Benjamin observed. "The world looks much more manageable when you're looking down at it. And the sisal is excellent for the claws." π‘οΈβ¨π§
They spent the next hour perched on the Ladder-Tree, watching the Vacuum finish its meal and return to its dark closet. πͺοΈπͺ The Library fell silent once more, the only sound being the rhythmic *ticking* of the grandfather clock. π°οΈπ―οΈπΎ
"I think," Peter-Pounce said, "that I shall stay here for a while. Itβs much more aesthetic than the floor. And the sun is hitting the top step." βοΈπ§ββοΈπ
"Itβs a good choice," Benjamin said, stretching a long paw. "But don't stay too long, or your mother will start to worry. She thinks youβve been eaten by the Monster." π πΏ
Peter-Pounce purred, a deep, resonant sound. He felt safe, he felt high, and he felt like a kitten of the world. π¦π‘οΈπ The Sun-Room Garden had been exciting, and the Laundry Room had been damp, but the Library Window... the Library Window was home. π ππ
But as he looked at the garden below, he saw a small, white flash near the fence. It was a white rabbit, and it was heading straight for the "Forbidden-Patch" of catnip. π°πΏπ§Ώ
"Benjamin!" Peter-Pounce whispered. "Look! An intruder!" ππ°
